ClearStar Portal :: Check Your Webmail

Blog

Having used Broadsoft’s BroadWorks for many years I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked “How can callers hear different music each time they are placed on hold?” This is something the BroadWorks platform does not easily provide for end customers.  Every time a caller is placed on hold, they hear the beginning of whatever song or sequence of songs is configured for that business.   While music on hold is something that most callers may not find particularly entertaining,  what if we could have listeners hear a variety of songs, and just “tune-in” to wherever the music sequence is (as if you just turned the radio on, or resumed playing your iPod)?  That’s when the light bulb lit up – we can use Asterisk complement the Broadworks platform and provide a flexible music on hold server!
Asterisk is an open source implementation of a PBX created by Digium.  When I think of Asterisk, I think of it as the canvas that enables the artist creatively express their vision.  Asterisk provides a framework for us to develop custom telephony applications within our telephony network while Broadworks is the workhorse that provides carrier class VoIP service levels.

Netflix hit 20 million subscribers last year, and with reportedly over 60% of their subscribers streaming video over the Internet, the pressure they are putting on the Internet as a delivery system for television shows and movies has taken center stage lately.  Netflix holds the most notoriety as the leader of the pack, but Hulu and even DirecTV through its on-demand service delivered over your broadband connection have been at it for years.

The heart of the problem is that a single movie viewed in a day can consume magnitudes more bandwidth than a traditional Internet user will consume in a day through typical Internet browsing, email and social network use. Consider this example graphing a day of “traditional” Internet use for a single home in which a total of 150 Megabytes of data is downloaded in short bursts of use:

Graph of Normal Internet Use: 150MB Downloaded

As the business world continues to become more reliant on Internet access to do business, with more and more of what we do every day in business  sits in “the cloud” it is becoming critical for even small businesses to have highly redundant Internet access.  Most network providers and large businesses maintain large connections to different Internet backbones and use complex technologies to make the network operate through a failure of one of those paths.  Small to mid-size businesses are generally reliant on a single connection or a single and a back-up without any automated failover.  In the server world of small business redundancy in server hardware is common, and High Availability clusters are becoming more common, where redundant systems communicate with each other and automatically fail over when the other one fails.   We are in the business of bringing the high availability (or “HA”) concept to network connectivity and are introducing our HA Internet Access product for small business that bring the small business high availability over inexpensive circuits, and we handle the complex technology to make it fail over.
