How to setup Outlook Express 5.x to filter Spam email

 

  1. From the Tools menu, select Message Rules, and select Mail

  1. Select New

  1. A New Mail Rule dialog box will appear
  2. Under Select the Conditions for your rule: scroll down and check Where the To or CC line contains people
  3. Under Select the Actions for your rule: check the box labeled Move it to the specified folder
  4. Within the Rule Description box, click on contains people

  1. A Select People window will appear
  2. In the top field type in the first part of your email address
    For example, if your email address is anyone@impulse.net type in anyone, then click Add

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Click on 'anyone'

  2. Click Options

  1. The Rule Conditions Options window will appear

  2. Select Message does not contain the people below button and click OK

  1. Click OK to close the Select People window

  2. Back in the New Mail Rule window click on specified

  1. A Move window will appear

  1. Click the + next to Local Folders

  2. Select the Deleted Items folder and click OK

  1. Back at the Edit Mail Rule window click on OK

  1. Back at the Message Rules window click OK

Setup is complete.

Any new mail that isn't addressed to you will be put in Deleted Items. You might want to check this folder after you download your next batch of messages to see how the rule is working for you.

Once you looked thru the messages in Deleted Items, you can delete all the mail stored there by clicking on Deleted Items with your right mouse button. Then with your left mouse button click on Empty Deleted Items folder. This will remove that mail from your hard drive for good.

NOTE: Mailing Lists that you subscribe to, might not address you directly. So, if you want to receive that sort of email, then you will need to put in an extra filter in front this one.
