Home, Home on the Web
|
This is a resource page for Marc's Wednesday elective Webpage Class.
Here are some helpful Web links to info, images, and software to help you make a standout homepage!
The hardest part is having something to say!
You can check out the results on the DMS Student Page.
HTML General Info
- NCSA (at UIUC) Beginner's Guide to HTML
- A good introduction to HTML from the people who started it.
- HTML Quick Reference
- A quick reference guide to HTML tags.
- The Bare Bones Guide to HTML
- All the basic HTML tags ready to study and print. The Plain Text (ASCII) version
is especially handy. The author's WWW Help Page has many useful links.
- HTML Tag Reference
- BIG reference to all HTML tags.
- The Webmaster's Reference Library
- Lots of links to resources on Web page design.
- The Web Developer's Virtual Library
- Thousands of links to resources on Web page design.
- HTML Writer's Guild HTML Resources
- Lots more links to resources on Web page design.
- HTML Goodies
- Useful tutorials on many topics and lots of JavaScript.
- Treebeard's Homebrew Homepages
- Treebeard's page on how to make a Web page.
There is a generic homepage that you can modify, and
a sample page of basic HTML commands.
The Unix Cheat Sheet will be handy if you
use UNIX to talk to your server. Treebeard also has a page of HTML links, but it's old.
Usenet Groups
The Usenet is the real heart of the Internet. It's like group email for the whole world,
experts and novices alike. Caveat Emptor! You can browse and search the 30,000+ newsgroups at
DejaNews.
- comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html
- This is CIWAH, the main Usenet group for HTML discussion. Some real help along with endless discussion.
- alt.html
- More HTML discussion, not so opinionated (or informed) as CIWAH.
- comp.lang.javascript
- Discussion of Javscript for simple Web programming within HTML.
- comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi
- Advanced discussion of CGI, which allows real programming on the Web if you can get server access.
Graphics for the Web
You can right-click on any image or background and save it as a file, but you may be violating copyright.
- Clipart.com
- Lots of links to free clipart images.
- Barry's Clip Art Server
- Lot's more free clip art.
- Background FAQ
- How to use background colors and images.
- Pattern Land
- Many background images, but most of them are "busy".
- Hex Color Codes
- How to work with <COLOR="rrggbb"> Hex codes.
- Hex and Word Colors Codes
- Handy chart all on one page
HTML Validators
These sites run online programs that check and evaluate your new homepage. They can catch obvious HTML mistakes like missing tags,
misspelled words, and dead links. I don't take their advice too seriously!
- Doctor HTML and Web Site Garage
- Useful diagnostics, not too critical.
- WebTechs Validation Service
- Hardcore HTML validation. My pages never pass.
Web Hosting
After you make your page, you have to find a server to host it. You may already have a personal account
with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers this service. If not, you can find
free web page hosting on the Web, though there's often a hidden cost with advertisements and other junk.
Well known free web hosts include Geocities and Xoom.
Be sure to read the fine print! You get what you pay for!
- The Free Webpage Provider Review
- This site lists over 178 free webspace providers and over 145 free email providers, and compares their
services.
- InterNIC
- Consider buying your own domain name like your_name.com!
You still have to find a server for your pages, but you can change servers and keep the same address.
Consider this if you have long-range computer ambitions. A domain name costs abut $35 per year to register.
InterNIC is the company that makes it happen.
Recommended Software
This is all for DOS/Windows. If you find good MAC software, please let me know so I can add it to this list!
This software is sharewhare. Most authors ask you pay a modest registration fee if you continue to use them.
- CuteFTP
- A Winsock FTP program for uploading and downloading files. Netscape and IE also do FTP, but CuteFTP has several advantages.
It can resume a big download without starting over if it is interrupted, and it allows easy uploads and
file maintenance with a remote host. It's also consistently faster. I use this program to maintain the DMS home page on our server
at Impulse.Net since they do not allow shell access.
- Take Command
- A Great utility that gives you a command line in Windows without making a DOS window.
Highly recommended for Windows users that prefer DOS commands to manage files.
This is the program that got me to finally accept Win3.1. I'm not sure yet about Win95/98!
- Programmer's File Editor (PFE)
- A very good freeware text editor/viewer. I make all my Web pages with this editor.
- Paint Shop Pro (PSP)
- PSP is a very good shareware graphics program. PSP is not quite PhotoShop, but it runs in 4MB, and has many features.
- Cool Edit and Real Player
- Sound programs. Cool Edit lets you play and manipulate sound files in any format, and RealPlayer lets
you hear/send live audio/video over the Web.
Finding *free* software on the Net
A huge amount of software is available on the Net for free download. Some of this software is freeware that you can use without restrction.
Other software is shareware that requires payment if you decide to use it beyond a certain time, typically 30 days.
Most shareware works on the honor system, and it's up to you to register the software that you use.
Please honor this system. It allows real people to make a living doing what they love!
I try to avoid beta and demo software that is crippled or expires after a certain date.
Many more links are available on Treebeard's Software Archive Page.
Shareware.com
is a useful meta-index of software available on the Net for all computer types. You can search by name or description.
