"Helping Those in Need"

"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to
persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."

- Christopher Reeve

Hello students and parents:

Welcome to Dunn Middle School. Our theme this year, "Helping Those in Need" will be the cornerstone of our study of the books The Adventures of Robin Hood and Loser as well as the focus of some of our enrichment classes and all-school trips.

As you may know, our school theme Carpe Diem means "seize the day." The school theme combined with our year-long theme of "Helping Those in Need" and a concentrated look at heroes, may prove to be the groundwork for a particularly interesting and positive year at DMS.

Sixth through eighth grade is, in our opinion, the most exciting stage of development for young people. Now is the time that they discover the world around them and the importance of their influence on the world. As educators, we believe our primary goal is to educate the mind of our students rather than simply filling the brain with facts. We want students to begin to think for themselves, make conscious decisions, and believe that they can control their destiny in a positive fashion.

Every aspect of DMS is linked, in some fashion, to our goal of helping students to become well-rounded and intelligent decision makers. We are prepared for helping them through the bad decisions, and we celebrate the good decisions and accomplishments. We believe a strong partnership with parents is the key to our success. Together we can support and nurture our next generation.

This handbook should be kept in a safe place. It will help you greatly throughout the school year.

Carpe diem!

Linda
