Marc's Science Homework for the Week of September 10-14

"Human beings were invented by water as a device for
transporting itself from one place to another.
" -- Tom Robbins
Monday, Sep. 10
We're studying water in my Science classes. Your first assignment is to create a cover page for your new lab book. It must include the word "Hydrology" and anything else that is water related. Be ready to share your creation on Wednesday!

We will begin our study of water with a stumper. Your boat is floating in a small lake with a load of heavy rocks. What will happen to the water level of the lake if you drop the rocks over the side? Will the water level rise, fall, or stay exactly the same?

Write your hypothesis (guess) in your lab book - and your reasons why. Then describe an experiment you can actually do to test it. Sorry - we don't have a lake or a boat, so what can you do instead?

Tuesday, Sep. 11
Work time on rocks-in-boat stumper. Write lab notes about what you do and what happens. Was your hypothesis right?

Wednesday, Sep. 12
Be ready to share your hydrology cover page and experiment results.

The next project is to repeat the experiment changing just one factor you think is important - for example the weight or shape or material of your "rocks", or the size of the "lake", or the kind of "water", or the shape of the "boat". Repeat your experiment several times and look for differences and patterns. How can you measure results? Homework is to write a proposal and hypothesis about your experiment before you start working.

Thursday, Sep. 13
Work time on rocks-in-boat stumper. Write lab notes about what you do and what happens, even if it doesn't work. We'll have work time on Monday (and Tuesday if needed). Lab reports will probably be due next Wednesday.

Back to School!

DMS teachers will each post the week's expected homework here on Sunday before the week begins. Please understand that what we expect isn't always what we get, for example a science project may take more time. But we will try to keep these posts current.
