Marc's Science Homework for the Week of September 17-21

"In this world, there is nothing softer or thinner than
water. But to compel the hard and unyielding, it has no
equal. That the weak overcomes the strong, that the hard
gives way to the gentle - this everyone knows. Yet no one
asks accordingly.
"
- Lao-tzu

We'll have work time this week to finish our first experiments with rocks, boats, lakes, and water level. Repeat your experiment at least five times changing just one factor you think is important, and look for patterns. Final lab reports are due on Thursday.

A "classic lab report" looks something like this:

  • Title, date, partners – always
  • Question or purpose – what are you trying to learn?
  • Hypothesis and reasons why – what you think will happen and why
  • Equipment – stuff you need for your experiment
  • Procedure – what you will do, like a recipe
  • Data – what happens when you do it
  • Analysis – make sense of your data, look for patterns, maybe make a graph
  • Conclusion – go back to your question, what did you learn?

Work with partners, but everyone must write their own lab report! You don't have to write your lab report with separate sections like this, but it might help you stay organized.

Monday, September 17
We'll talk about lab reports before work time. Homework is to write a rough draft (not too rough!) of your Question and Hypothesis in your lab book. Try to connect your experiment to our original rocks-in-boat experiment. Be sure to give reasons for your hypothesis. Don't assume anything. Let someone else read your question and be sure they can understand what you're up to! Be ready to share tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 18
Work time on rocks-in-boat experiments. Homework is to write a rough draft (not too rough!) of your Equipment and Procedure in your lab book. Be ready to share tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 19
I hope everyone is done by now, but there will be work time if needed. We'll have class time to finish lab reports. A graph is not required, but do it if you can - especially 8th grade. Final reports are due on Thursday. Reports should be neat and well-written in your lab book, ready to turn in to your teacher ;=) Talk to me if you want to type your report. Be ready to share your results in class tomorrow.

Thursday, September 20
Final lab reports are due at the start of class. We'll have some work time for fine tuning, and we'll share results if there's time. No weekend homework – I'll be in Portland for my son Ewan's wedding!
