Marc's Science Homework for the Week of September 24-28

"Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed or wind to blow."
- Robert Hunter, Grateful Dead

Monday, September 24
I missed class today on a long weekend in Portland, Oregon for my son's wedding. Perfect weather and a fine wedding with three generations of Kummels present for the ceremony. I'm so happy for Ewan and Roz! No homework, but be sure your lab book is in the pile at the start of class on Tuesday!

Tuesday, September 25
I'm back to school! We'll share results of our rocks-in-boat experiments. Homework is to write a paragraph (or more) that begins like this:

"I worked on my science experiment all last week. Something I learned about doing science – rather than just learning about it – is that… "

Your writing (and thinking) should be about doing science, not just about rocks and boats. Be ready to share what you write!

Wednesday, September 26
We'll share "something I learned" paragraphs. Then we'll work on reading scales to measure distance, mass, and volume. Homework is to make a perfect cubic centimeter. It can be any material, found or made, but it must be a cube exactly one centimeter on each edge!

Thursday, September 27
Perfect cubic centimeters are due. We'll have some worksheets on measuring distance, mass, and volume. You should finish in class, but it's homework for Monday if you don't.

Dawn's Language Arts Assignments Sept. 24-28

““We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by at least one laugh.”--Nietzsche

7th and 8th Grade

Monday: Essay corrections for “I Should Have Known Better,” due tomorrow. You will receive your original back in class with comments. Some of you have more work than others, but even those who got perfect scores must improve their papers. If you suspect that your paper is so brilliant that it cannot be improved upon, email me and I will inspire you. YOUR ORIGINAL MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE NEW COPY OR IT WILL NOT BE GRADED.

Tuesday: “Dorothy Goes to Hollywood” Question sheet. Due Wednesday.

Wednesday & Thursday: Interview with your future self. Congratulations! The year is 2037 and you have been selected by Time Magazine as the Person of the Year. Included in the magazine is a one-to-two page article about you and all of your accomplishments. I will give you a list of questions to guide you, but you are encouraged to come up with your own as well. You may have an introductory paragraph, but the majority of the article should be in interview format (see below). You will be graded on content and creativity. Due Friday.

Example:

Interviewer: Now, Dawn, rumor has it that you used to teach middle school English before you became a rock star. Is that true?

Dawn: As a matter of fact, it is. I actually began writing songs for my classes based on the Language Arts curriculum. Some of my early hits, as you may recall, include “Participle Party” and “Metaphorically Speaking.” Of course, that’s before I teamed up with Chili Peppers. My music changed a lot after I met Anthony and Flea.

(Notice that the answers are single-spaced, but there is a line skipped every time the speaker changes.)
