Mac's 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies - Week of Oct. 1-5

Yes, the time has come to don our Indiana Jones hats and get out in the field! This week, we'll be excavating an "archaeological site" on campus, in search of signs of hominids such as Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, and Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis! We will take turns carefully unearthing our finds, gridding their locations, photographing them, and analyzing their composition and significance. Each class will keep an "Excavation Blog" where we will upload photographs and descriptions of our finds, as well as accounts of our progress. You will also be keeping a "Dig Diary" to record the events of each day's excavation.

Marc's Science Homework for the Week of October 1-5

"We entered the night sea in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and turned on our dive lights. The sea was aglow with transparent, gelatinous plankton--unearthly, fragile forms. They are animated by the spark of life, but they are actually 99 percent water with only the most fragile of membranes to contain this spark. They break apart and disappear with a wave of my hand... I realized that life is the miracle of organized water. These tiny, transparent creatures are water alive. And so are we."

- Jean-Michel Cousteau, Ocean Futures email, May 2003

Monday, October 1
We'll work on measuring size, volume, and mass. Homework for Tuesday is to finish all three worksheets. Be sure to estimate between the ticks to the right number of significant digits using the numbers {0 2 5 8 0}. Accuracy matters!

Tuesday, October 2
We'll review homework on measuring size, volume, and mass for the quiz tomorrow. Be sure you're ready for the quiz - there should be no surprises!

You'll receive a reading packet about water use in Santa Barbara County. Read this all before our field trip on Thursday! You don't need to write answers to the questions after each chapter, but you should be able to answer them in your head. There will be an easy test on the reading – easy if you read it! - when we come back to school next Tuesday after Columbus Day.

Wednesday, October 3
Quiz on measuring size, volume, and mass. I recommend you bring your own ruler that you trust. The questions will be just like the worksheets, so you should get them all right if you're careful. We'll probably finish early, so bring your reading packet for work time.

Thursday, October 4
We'll celebrate my 60th birthday with a field trip to the Goleta Wastewater Treatment Plant! Trust me - this is a fun tour. (We'll do some other fun stuff in Santa Barbara too.)

No science class on Friday, and Monday, October 8 is a school holiday for Columbus Day. Remember that we will have an easy test on the reading packet when we return on Tuesday. You might want to review the material.
