Mac's 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies - Week of Oct. 15-19

This week, we will conclude our archaeological dig project. Check for updates at our blog: DMS Big Dig On Wednesday, Dig Diaries will be due. They should include an entry for each day of excavation, as well as an entry describing our day of photography/labeling/record-keeping. At the end of the week, you will be doing an assessment activity to show what you've learned this unit.

Dawn's Language Arts Assignments Oct. 15-19

"Chaos is a friend of mine." -Bob Dylan

Monday & Tuesday
Oh no! Fido was left behind on the family camping trip! Write a 1-2 page story about your pet’s first day on his or her own in the wilderness. Feel free to invent a pet if you don’t have one, or if you don’t like the one you have. Your story should start after Rover has already been abandoned. (In other words, please don’t tell me how Cody gets left behind. Tell me instead what happens to Fifi once she is alone).

This will be a continuation of today’s journal assignment. It must have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Be sure not to misspell any of the rewrite words. Due Wednesday.

Wednesday
Revision night! You will make final corrections and revisions to your Pets Gone Wild stories according to the suggestions given to you during peer-editing in class today. Final draft due Thursday.

Thursday
Read up to page 25 in Call of the Wild. Follow instructions on the Chapter One Worksheet (to be handed out in class on Thursday). Due Monday.

If you did not get a copy of the reading you can find chapter one online at this address: http://www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/lit/adventure/TheCalloftheWild/Chap1.html

Don’t forget tomorrow is a project day! Come prepared to work on your festival booth!

Marc's Science Homework for October 15-19

"All I need are some tasty waves…"
- Jeff Spicoli

Monday, October 15
I'll return old scales and water reading tests. If you missed any on the scales test, then be VERY CAREFUL with your lab work this week! If you missed any on the water reading test, then show me test corrections tomorrow!

This week we're measuring the Density of Homogeneous Materials. You owe me four separate sections in your lab book on the density of water; something that sinks; something that floats; and something else that's interesting or funny or weird. Measure the density of water in groups, but for the rest you're on your own. For each section, you must have:

  • Title and date (and partners for water density)

  • Describe your object and material

  • How will you measure mass and volume to calculate density?

  • Data worksheet for your measurements and calculations. Show all steps and be careful with units!

  • Real data and calculations – what are the mass, volume, and calculated density?

Show me your lab book as you finish each section, and add your results to the Excel spreadsheet on the Smart Board computer. We'll cover the details of how to enter data in class.

You know I'm fussy about how you record data in your lab book! Homework is to come to class every day this week with an object to measure and a density worksheet already written in your lab book so you can get right to work! Don't forget to add your results to the database.

Tuesday, October 16
Test corrections on water test are due. Show me!

Work time - come to class with another material to measure and a density worksheet already written in your lab book so you can get right to work! Add your results to the database.

Wednesday, October 17
Work time - come to class with another material to measure and a density worksheet already written in your lab book so you can get right to work! Add your results to the database.

Thursday, October 18
Last work day on measuring the Density of Homogeneous Materials. Be sure all your data is on the computer!

The last step to finish your lab report after your four data sections is to think about what you've been doing and what it means. Write a paragraph or more that explains what density is. Don't just repeat the definition that density = mass / volume. What does this really mean? Research is always ok, but say it in your own words!

Final lab reports are due Monday (Oct. 22)

Skimboard Update!

  • Weird Science on Wednesday after school from 3:30 - 4:30 is skimboard resin time! If you can't make it we'll do it for you.

  • There's NO Hike Club on Thursday – we have elective presentations, and we'll finish resining skimboards if we're not done.

  • Friday skimboard elective is going to the beach! We'll return to DMS at 4:00 P.M. after some tasty sand at Refugio!
