6th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies Update

Hey Scholars,

Here's an update of homework for Friday.

Language Arts: Time to test run your Festival recipe idea! Complete the handout as you try out your hand in the kitchen this weekend! Also, since you are the Pop-Up Card MASTERS, please dazzle us with a card made especially for Doc. He shared some entertaining stories and fascinating history about Dunn - in your card, let him know what your favorite story was, or what interested you the most. You'll make his day!

Social Studies: Complete the map of the Middle East of Today, following the directions on the handout. Use an atlas or the internet to label and color the countries, capitals, and major water features.

Enjoy the weekend and don't forget to get your Festival costume ready!!!

Marc's Science Homework for the Week of October 22-26

Monday, October 22
Lab reports on measuring the Density of Homogeneous Materials are due. You will have work time today to make your reports perfect. Double-check your math and be careful with units. Be sure to get all your data into the computer today!

For each section of your report, be sure you have:
  • Title and date
  • Describe your object and material
  • How did you measure the mass and volume to calculate density?
  • Data worksheet with your measurements and calculations. Be careful with units!
The last step to finish your lab report after your four data sections is to think about what you've been doing and what it means and write a conclusion. Write a paragraph or more that explains what density is. Don't just repeat the definition that density is mass divided by volume. Look at all the school results in the database on the SmartBoard. What does this number called density really mean? Research is always ok, but please say it in your own words!

Your final lab report with concluding paragraph is due at the start of class on Tuesday!

Tuesday, October 23
Final lab reports are due, with your concluding paragraph explaining what density is. I will collect lab books today. Be ready to share what you wrote about density. We'll try to figure it out together.

Homework is to estimate the percent of pore space in a cylinder full of marbles – that's the space between the marbles that is just air. Would it make a difference if we used BBs instead of marbles? What about the ground beneatyh our feet? A bonus if you can figure out step-by-step how to measure this pore space. Geometry students – is there an exact solution?

Wednesday, October 24
We will do a lab procedure together in class to measure the pore space, bulk and particle density, and water retention of glass marbles. I will give you a data worksheet to record our measurements. Homework is to crunch the numbers and figure all the results on the worksheet.

Thursday, October 25
Completed data worksheets are due. I hope to return lab books today. Classwork will be to write a lab report explaining what we just measured. Explain in your own words with pictures what are pore space, bulk and particle density, and water retention. This is due on Monday if you don't finish in class.

On Your Own…
What materials have the greatest and smallest density?

Next week, you will do your own project measuring the pore space, bulk and particle density, and water retention of some other material than marbles. Do some research – Wikipedia is a fine place to start. How do these qualities effect different soil types for growing plants? How is real soil different from a bunch of marbles? What improves water retention in soil?
