Marc's Science Homework for the Week of Nov.5 - 9

"Iron rusts from disuse; stagnant water loses its purity and
in cold weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap
the vigor of the mind."
- Leonardo da Vinci, "The Notebooks"

There's something NEW in the sky!
Your challenge this week is to spot Comet Holmes in the evening sky! It's the new "head" of the constellation Perseus in the northeast evening sky along the Milky Way below Cassiopia. This is a remarkable comet that has mysteriously brightened a million-fold over the last week. Bonus points if you can get a photo!

Monday, November 5
We all need an extra day after Halloween week to finish lab reports on measuring the porosity, density, and water retention of different materials. Final lab reports are due tomorrow. Be sure to ask for help in class today if you need it!

Here are the parts of a "classic lab report". You don't have to write this like an outline, but all of this should be in your final report:

  • Title, date, partners - always
  • Question - We started with marbles, how will your materials compare?
  • Hypothesis - What do you think – and why?
  • Equipment - Probably graduated cylinders and triple-beam balance, but maybe not?
  • Precedure - What did you do to measure these quantities?
  • Data: - Staple/paste worksheets into your report. Compare your material with the measurements we did in class with marbles:
    • Pore space (%)
    • Bulk density (g/cm3)
    • Particle ensity (g/cm3)
    • Water retention (%)
  • Analysis - How is your material different from the marbles?
  • Conclusion - How did your results differ from your hypothesis? What does it mean?

We will start an Excel spreadsheet to collect all our data so we can compare results. I'm most curious about pore space and water retention.

    Tuesday, November 6
Lab reports on porosity, density, and water retention of different materials are due. We will share and review lab reposts in class. I will collect lab books, but I'll give you an extra day for re-tooling if you need it. I'll return lab books in your conference next week.

Be ready to share your results at the start of class. Be sure your data is on the computer.

    Wednesday, November 7
Bring your calculator – or else you have to use my ancient wizard slide rule! We'll have some fun with calculator tricks and practice crunching real numbers for real results!

    Thursday, November 8
No classes today – field trip to the UCSB Marine Biology Lab.

    Friday, November 9
    No Science class on Friday.
Next science class is Monday, November 26.
    Enjoy the break!

    Marc's Stumper for the Week:
A DMS student missed her science work time to measure the density of 3 different materials. In science class, we've been using triple-beam balances and graduated cylinders to measure mass and volume. She looked around at home and found a measuring cup to measure volume, but she had no accurate balance to measure the mass. Another student had the opposite problem. He had an accurate balance to measure mass, but he had no way to measure an exact volume of water. How did each student manage to complete the assignment at home?
