There's Still something NEW in the sky!
You can still find Comet Holmes in the evening sky! It's the new "head" of the constellation Perseus in the northeast evening sky along the Milky Way below Cassiopia. This is a remarkable comet that has mysteriously brightened a million-fold over the past two weeks. Bonus points if you can get a photo!

Marc's Stumper for the Week:
People around the world are celebrating the autumn harvest season with a feast, just as we will celebrate with Thanksgiving dinner. Foods - like people and music and ideas - also travel around the world. The wild turkeys and sweet corn that the native Americans shared with the Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving dinner were domesticated long before in central Mexico. What about all the other wonderful foods on your holiday table? Where in the world were they first grown and harvested, and by whom? We should remember them all in our blessings!

Dawn's Language Arts Assignments Nov. 12--13

Monday & Tuesday

Study for the in-class essay test. You will be asked to respond to one of the following questions in class. THIS IS AN OPEN BOOK TEST. A good response will need to cite specific passages from the book, so be familiar enough with major events that you can turn to them easily.

Essay Prompts

1. What role do Mercedes, Hal, and Charles play in the novel? What do they demonstrate about the weaknesses of human nature?

2. To what extent does Jack London anthropomorphize Buck—that is, present him like a human being? To what extent is Buck clearly acting as an animal?

3. Compare the roles of John Thornton and Judge Miller. Who, from the novel’s point of view, is the better master? Defend your answer.

4. What is the “call of the wild”? How does it affect Buck's behavior throughout the novel?

5. Explain the connection between Call of the Wild and Darwin’s theory of evolution. Give examples from the book, in which London demonstrates or refutes the idea of “survival of the fittest.”

Internship Week/Break:

By Monday, Nov. 26, please finish the final draft of your "Pets Gone Wild" story. These stories will be returned to you with suggestions. The final draft will be worth 40 points and will be the first grade of the new trimester. It should be grammatically perfect, with no spelling or punctuation errors, and should demonstrate creative, thoughtful word choices. The plot should be unified, imaginative, and logical.
