From The Director... El Mercado! Many thanks to David Andreas for helping to invite the firemen from the Santa Ynez firehouse who came to El Mercado and helped judge our traditional SALSA contest. The firemen and Marc (our official DMS Salsa judge due to his ability to tolerate (and love) hot and spicy foods!) agreed on the following:
DMS "Talent" Show! The DMS Talent Show is a fun, hilarious, and memorable evening filled with everything from true talent to acts that will make you laugh so hard your face will ache. Please be sure to join in the fun on Friday night, February 5, at 7:00 at the Dunn School barn. Wear warm clothing! All students will be performing! 8th Grade News! This is a busy time of year for eighth grade students and their parents. Students will have the opportunity next week to "shadow" a high school student in order to see classes at Dunn School for a few hours on February 13 or 15. In March, students will be invited to Santa Ynez Valley Union High School. They are beginning several fundraisers for the service project and Eighth Grade Road Trip including the following:

Marc’s stumper for the week:
I'm so glad we had real rain this week! It's been very dry. I wonder what
the little birds do in the cold rain? I reckon they hide
under the leaves of shrubs and trees to stay warm and
dry. Oak leaves are like umbrellas for songbirds. My
stumper is different. If the leaves in the tree canopy
can block the rain, then they will also block the light
on sunny days. How do trees and other plants arrange
their leaves so they capture the most sunlight without
shading out their own leaves below? Hint: study the
winter-bare "Carpe Diem" Valley Oak tree at school!
| About last week's stumper: Electricity travels at the speed of light, but electrons move slower than a snail. Imagine a long tube full of "Acme Frictionless Marbles". If I push a new marble into the tube, another will be pushed out the end. The impulse is very fast, but each marble only moves a bit. That's how Direct Current (DC) works. Electrons move an inch or two per hour, but my flashlight turns on right away. My household power is Alternating Current (AC). The electrons in my desk lamp are pushed back and forth 60 times every second. They don't really travel at all. |
