On 11 November 1999, Seanette and I met with some of the giants in the anti-spam movement, who were in Santa Barbara for Software.com's “Spam Roundtable III”, which was a part of their “Return on Infrastructure” Conference.  Appearing in the above picture:

   2     4
1     3     5

      6

  1. Nick Nicholas, one of the top guys with the MAPS-RBL.
  2. David O'Donnell, formerly one of AOL's top administrators.
  3. Seanette, my lovely wife.
  4. Afterburner, the top abuse administrator at Erols/RCN.
  5. George Mills, of EuroCAUCE.
  6. Me.
My wife, Seanette, wrote the following account of the meeting (footnotes added, and some minor editing, by me):
Well, let's see, Bob and I were way early [with traffic in Santa Barbara, you want to allow extra travel time. Part of the freeway appeared teergrubed]. John1 couldn't make it, but Nick, Afterburner, David O'Donnell, and George Mills [He was identified as being connected to Euro-CAUCE] did. We wound up hanging out in the hotel bar, since some had an appointment at 7pm. The conversations [usually two or three in progress at once] were great, the company was great, I hope the pictures come out, and I even got a hug from Afterburner. :-) [Bob and I took Nick and Simpson(?)2 to the airport, which got us some more chat time, which was much enjoyed.]

  1. John R. Levine, author of The Internet For Dummies, and the guy behind Network Abuse Clearinghouse.  Seanette and I got to meet him briefly, and shake his hand, but he couldn't stick around, so he's not in the above picture.

  2.
  3. Never did clearly get his name3.  He apparently was a writer for some publication or another, there to cover the conference.  Since we were already taking Nick to the airport, and this guy also needed to go there, we gave him a ride too.

  4.
  5. It's been suggested by someone in N.A.N-A.E that this person might have been Simson Garfinkel, who has been discussed in a few threads there, including at least one based on the similarity between his name and that of a famous musical team.
